In this post I will be discussing Blackboard, a technology from Dr. Wang's "Top 15 mentioned technologies in the classroom" List.

Blackboard seems to be very similar to Canvas. I believe this is the website my dad had to use when completing college courses online through the Army. It has your course and ways to sort/filter through them. It has Calendar, Messages, Grades, and a tab for assistance for your use. I played around with all the different tabs, but you also can learn through tutorials. In the grading tab its visually pleasing being organized by the class, then by the assignment. With each showing how many have submitted and have not.

It seems to have generated a fake class for me to try out in the free trial. In the grading tab it even had a spot labeled originality for their posts. Some students have a green check, others have an orange dash, and one student has a red x. I clicked on this students work and it goes through stating that it is 100% copied from an outside source. While going through all the different pages bubbles pop up next to new buttons or tabs, with an explanation of what it is.

Overall this technology is great for education. I do believe the layout of it is a bit hard to navigate so I understand why I've only seen or heard of it with college students. I believe when my father used it,  we always had a hard time submitting his assignments. He would have a hard time inserting images for his discussions or text entries. The box was too small to arrange his text and image together properly. I wonder if there have been changes, or updates to fix that.

I think this Technology is perfect for the teachers step of preplanning and assessment.

  1. Hi Caitlyn,
I have heard of Blackboard before. I have a friend at WSU and know that they used to use Blackboard as their platform for education management. From what my friend told me it was difficult to navigate and regularly had technical problems, they told me that they prefer Canvas over Blackboard. I do not think this is a tool I would use just because of my prior knowledge of it. You did a good post that was very informative!

  2. Hi Caitlyn,
I have never heard of Blackboard before but I do like the features of it as you described them in your post. I also think it would be more beneficial for college students to use this website, but still a great tool! Great post.

  4. Hello Caitlyn- this seems really interesting and similar to Canvas. I appreciate the detail in your explanation and that you shared your dad's experience with it. I can see why this may be difficult to navigate. From the pictures it looks more difficult than Canvas is.
